In this math lesson, learners use slices of bread and geoboards to explore several ways to divide a rectangle in half. Learners also identify equivalent fractions that represent one-half.

Materials List (per group of students)
- Loaf of bread
- Knife
- 12-15 sheets of geodot paper (laminated if possible)
- Marker
- Geoboards
- Rubber bands
- Activity Sheets: Geodots I
- Activity Sheets: Geodots II
- Ribbon (several yards depending on tasks)
- Envelopes with task cards
- Spinner marked with 5 equal areas: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/8
- 4 whole paper plates
- Paper plate pieces (Use Activity Sheets: “Pizza Pieces” as a template to make four 1/2 pieces, fifteen 1/4 pieces, sixteen 1/3 pieces, thirty 1/8 pieces, and twenty 1/6 pieces)
