In this activity, learners use squares to figure out how many border tiles are needed to enclose different areas. Learners start by making square ponds and creating a table to help them figure out a pattern. Then they move on to rectangular ponds. The goal is to connect patterns and functions through the investigation of area and perimeter. This activity could be connected to lesson plans about pond science.
