SMILE @ AAAS/AAAS @ SMILE

AAAS

SMILE Principal Investigator Darrell Porcello will speak at the “Sharing Science with the Public Worldwide” session of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada. With 2,800 activities, and activity translations in over 20 languages, the howtosmile.org collection is a growing resource that can be used around the globe.

SMILE activities from the AAAS Kinetic City include explorations in astronomy, environmental science, animal biology and much more. For earth science, try Go With the Flow where learners work together drawing comic-style pictures of the water cycle. For human anatomy, try Germ Tag where learners in a large group model how the body fights infection. For economics (and aliens), try Slush Rush where learners run an outer space drink stand!

At the AAAS meerting in Vancouver, FREE Family Science Days will give public visitors the chance to talk with scientists in person, try hands-on activities, and watch live shows like "Kinetic City" and “The Real Science of Alien Worlds."

Baby GeniusWant to help learners see themselves as real scientists, no matter where they live or go to school?? Put their photo (or even your own) on the "cover" of Science Magazine, published by AAAS! Also try the AAAS activity The Face of Science, which gets learners to draw what they think a scientist looks like, discover common ideas and stereotypes about scientists, and expand how they picture scientists—even picturing themselves as scientists too.
